Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore has described Manchester United skipper Wayne Rooney as a nine-year-old Mercedes.
The 30-year-old has struggled for United this season, and his ineffective performance in the 3-1 defeat to Watford last week attracted criticism from all directions.
Collymore thinks that United manager Jose Mourinho will be better-served if he ships Rooney off to MLS or another competition sooner than later.
He writes in his column for the Daily Mirror: “If Wayne Rooney was a car, he'd be an eight- or nine-year old Mercedes Benz — a fabulous motor that, when it rolled off the production line, was an absolute beauty and fully loaded with all the kit.
“In 2016, it still drives well enough (it has a Mercedes Benz engine after all, and some lovely bits and pieces). But, the trouble is it has 110,000 miles on the clock too, and is no longer up to the standards of a Bluetooth-compatible, all-singing, all-dancing 65 plate.
“I'm not saying Rooney is ready for the scrapheap, don't get me wrong.
“But the time does look right for Jose Mourinho not just to park him on the Manchester United bench for a few weeks but to drive him out of Old Trafford altogether and stick him on a container ship bound for the USA."
