Chelsea victory over Valencia spoiled by surprise Wass goal

Chelsea have managed to secure a 2-2 draw with Valencia at the Mestalla.

Carlos Soler put the hosts ahead on the 40th minute mark, only for Mateo Kovacic to equalise 103 seconds later.

The Blues looked set to seal all three points and qualification to the knockout rounds after Christian Pulisic put them ahead.

But Daniel Wass managed to score an equaliser with eight minutes remaining when Kepa misjudged the flight of his cross.

Valencia missed five big chances in the match, only one behind Borussia Dortmund's record of missed chances in a Champions League match.

Tammy Abraham was also helped off after landing awkwardly following an aerial challenge.

Frank Lampard's side will now need a positive result against Lille in the last group match.

Speaking on BT Sport, Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta said: "We had chances to win the game, and our focus was to win and close the qualification. We had a good reaction to the first goal and when we were 2-1 up we should have created more danger, more chances.

"Valencia are a good team, they have quality, and they pushed to the end because they wanted to qualify as well.

"It was a good game. Both teams wanted to win, they had chances, there was a penalty, VAR - everything. We'd prefer to have the three points but we have qualification in our hands against Lille at home."
