Timo Werner says injury was behind his decision not to take a penalty in Chelsea's Carabao Cup win over Aston Villa.
The German had earlier opened the scoring with an excellent header, his first goal in 11 matches.
Villa fought back to force penalties, but Reece James eventually scored the winning spot-kick for the home side.
"I had some pain in my calf but with only three substitutes, I couldn't go off," Werner, who was victim of a heavy challenge late in the second half, told Chelsea's post-match broadcast.
"But when you have fit players on the pitch, it's better they shoot than me today."
