Chelsea and AC Milan are haggling over terms for Tiemoue Bakayoko.
The London Evening Standard says Chelsea want to structure the transfer so that they can get all or as much of their money back as possible. Chelsea signed Bakayoko for £40m from Monaco a year ago.
They have discussed a £31.5m fee for next summer, with the loan fee covering the rest or a higher final sum of £35m plus £5m loan fee. However, Milan are reluctant to agree such a price, with their valuation at £27m and £4.5m respectively.
There is also a suggestion that Milan want Chelsea to pay some of Bakayoko's salary which is in excess of £100,000 a week.
Talks will continue this weekend but Milan feel they are in the stronger position given they have time to pursue other options and know the midfielder is not a key part of Maurizio Sarri's plans.
