Chelsea assistant boss Ray Wilkins has confirmed Michael Mancienne is under consideration for a marking job on Barcelona star Lionel Messi.

Manager Guus Hiddink is having to look at fresh options for the Champions League first-leg date at the Nou Camp because Ashley Cole is suspended, while Paulo Ferreira is out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.

Wilkins told Chelsea TV: "We have got Lionel Messi to deal with so Guus wants to have a look at everybody who he feels could cope with the situation.

"With Michael being right sided, he will always cut inside when the ball comes to him. It will narrow us up a touch but if Michael is chosen he won't let anyone down at all."
