Chelsea are showing an interest in Atletico Madrid defender Jose Maria Gimenez.
The centre-back is someone manager Frank Lampard believes could add solidity to the team's rear guard.
The Blues have already invested in their attack for the coming season, and are reportedly close to signing midfielder Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen.
But it is at the back where they appear vulnerable, shipping five to Liverpool in a 5-3 defeat that makes their top four hopes a little more complicated.
And The Telegraph has reported that Gimenez is being scouted by Chelsea.
However, the Blues would have to offload one of their current centre-backs to fund a deal for the Uruguay international.
