Chelsea star Gary Cahill has explained his surprising decision to help Jesse Lingard during the Blues' loss to Manchester United.
Chelsea suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat against United at Old Trafford on Sunday and the result saw their lead at the top of the Premier League table reduced to only four points.
Defender Cahill was subject to a lot of criticism as he inexplicably helped United star Lingard up from the ground while the ball was still in play just before Chelsea conceded the second goal, scored by Ander Herrera.

The England international has now gone on to defend his actions by stating that he assisted his opponent up in order to avoid conceding a penalty.
Cahill told Sky Sports: “I don't see how it could have cost me (picking up player from ground), my instinct was I was nervous it could have been a penalty, the sooner I get him on his feet I can stop the ref thinking otherwise.
“Maybe it looks silly in hindsight."
