Chelsea defender Jeffrey Bruma says everyone was pleased for Michael Essien after his successful return at Crystal Palace.
Essien played an hour and scored the only goal of the game.
"Michael has a smile on his face. He is glad to be back and scoring for the team," Bruma told Chelsea's website.
"I started at right back because there were two injuries, to Billy Clifford and Michael Mancienne, and in the second half I went to centre half for a bit. I think for the first game the coach wanted to try players in new positions and it was quite tiring for everyone. It was quite hot and humid but overall we did okay.
"As a defence we have trained with each other from the fifth of July until now and you feel the connection the more you play. We kept a clean sheet."
