Chelsea defeat had worried Abramovich burning midnight oil

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich held late night crisis talks after defeat to Liverpool on Friday night.

The Sun says he held late-night talks with Chelsea's top brass in a bid to stop a second successive season slipping away.

The club's Russian owner kept board members at Stamford Bridge until 1am in the aftermath of Friday's 2-1 home defeat by Liverpool.

Abramovich saw his squad — bolstered by a whopping £117million of new talent in the summer — outplayed in its first real test under Antonio Conte.

The Italian boss is not under immediate pressure having only taken over in the summer.

But Abramovich is anxious to stop a repeat of last season when Chelsea finished tenth and fired Jose Mourinho in their worst season in the Premier League since 1995-96.
