CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WRAP: Porto and Roma secure easy wins, victories for Barcelona, Bayern

The first week of the 2014/15 UEFA Champions League campaign was completed on Wednesday night with a number of surprising results again the order of the day.

The big winners were FC Porto and AS Roma who scored six and five goals respectively to down their opponents in confidence-boosting home triumphs.

Portuguese side Porto produced a stunning 6-0 victory over Belarusian side BATE Borisov thanks to a hat-trick from summer signing Yacine Brahimi who struck twice in the first half.

The Dragons were also served by goals from Jackson Martinez, Adrian and Vincent Aboubakar as they started their Group H campaign off with a punishing win.

In Italy, Rudi Garcia's Roma easily beat Russian side CSKA Moscow 5-1 courtesy of a brace from Gervinho and further goals from Juan Iturbe and Maicon.

An own-goal from Sergei Ignashevich early in the second half wrapped up the points for Roma while Ahmed Musa grabbed a late consolation for the visitors in their Group E opener.

In the same group, Bayern Munich required a 90th minute strike from Jerome Boateng to down his old club Manchester City 1-0 while Barcelona edged Cypriot outfit APOEL Nicosia in 1-0 thanks to Gerard Pique's first-half goal in Group F.

In that group's other fixture, Ajax managed to force a 1-1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain in Amsterdam with Edinson Cavani and Lasse Schone trading blows.

And in the remaining matches, a late defensive error allowed Luka Zahovic to head home an injury-time equalizer for NK Maribor to draw 1-1 after Manchester United loanee Nani had put Sporting Lisbon ahead in the 80th minute with a classy finish while Athletic Bilbao and Shakhtar Donetsk played out a 0-0 draw in Spain.
