CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WRAP: CSKA down Man City, Luiz Adriano with another hat-trick as Barcelona's Messi equals Raul record

Matchday 4 of the 2014/15 UEFA Champions League is now complete following Wednesday night's fixtures from around Europe.

In England, reigning Premier League champions Manchester City saw their hopes of progressing to the Round of 16 slip away when crashing to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of CSKA Moscow at the Etihad Stadium.

City conceded to the Russians in just the second minute when Seydou Doumbia got free to head home a free-kick at the back post before Yaya Toure drew his side level just six minutes later.

Doumbia then slotted home in the 34th minute to put CSKA in front again prior to City being reduced to nine men when Fernandinho received a second yellow card and Toure a straight red in the final 20 minutes.

Manuel Pellegrini's City now find themselves on the bottom of the Group E table with just two points from four outings which has them two behind third-placed CSKA and second-placed Roma while leaders Bayern Munich are already through to the next phase after their 2-0 home win over the Italians.

In Group G, Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw by Slovenian team NK Maribor who took the lead through Agim Ibraimi five minutes into the second half before Nemanja Matic leveled for the Blues in the 73rd minute.

Eden Hazard had a great chance to win it for Jose Mourinho's visitors only to see his 86th-minute penalty saved by Jasmin Handanovic but the west Londoners remain sitting on top of the table with eight points, three clear of Schalke and four ahead of Sporting Lisbon, following the Portuguese side's 4-2 win over the Germans.

Barcelona booked their spot in the final 16 courtesy of a 2-0 win over Ajax in Amsterdam thanks to a double from Lionel Messi who equaled Raul's Champions League record of 71 goals.

The Catalan giants join Group F leaders Paris Saint-Germain in the next phase after the French champions edged APOEL Nicosia 1-0 in Paris with Edinson Cavani on the board in the opening minute.

And in Group H, Shakhtar Donetsk made it 12 goals in two matches when hammering BATE Borisov 5-0 in Ukraine to add to their 7-0 win in Belarus a fortnight ago.

The destroyer on that night was Luiz Adriano with five goals and he backed it up with a second-half hat-trick to become just the third player to score two hat-tricks in the same Champions League season, after Lionel Messi and Mario Gomez (both 2011/12).

Shakhtar now sit second on the table on eight points, two behind leaders FC Porto who beat Athletic Bilbao 2-0 away to condemn the Spaniards to bottom place with BATE in third.

The fifth matchday of this season's Champions League takes place on Tuesday, November 25 and Wednesday, November 26.
