Former Champions League winner Steve McManaman hammered Manchester United's defence after their Champions League thrashing by Barcelona.

Barca thumped United 3-0 with Lionel Messi scoring twice.

“Brilliant goal by the magician but obviously helped out by Manchester United ," former Liverpool and Real Madrid winger McManaman said as Messi peeled away to celebrate opening the scoring.

“You cannot give him any help at all; whether it was Ashley Young losing the ball originally when he didn't have to or Phil Jones backing off letting him go in on his left foot.

“You see here, Ashley Young is closed down. Messi goes in on his left foot, goes past Fred, Phil Jones starts backing off, let's him go out in the space.

“Nobody goes and closes down the ball. They have to close him down. He scores goals too often. Go and hunt him down."
