CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Stalemate as Man Utd and Valencia share a scoreless draw

Man Utd had chances to win this encounter but had to settle of a 0-0 draw with Valencia after an improved second half performance failed to produce a goal

Man Utd won their first group game in this season's Champions League and that was probably the highlight of their campaign so far after a woeful start to the Premier League.

With boss Jose Mourinho severely critical of their performance after defeat at West Ham they certainly showed commitment in the first half but were let down by poor pass selection and pedestrian attacks. Marcus Rashford twice tested the Valencia keeper Neto and that was the sum total of the host's attacking threat in the opening 45 minutes.

The spark was still missing from the Red Devil's and there were even a few boos as the half time whistle sounded.

Valencia have lost their last four Champions League fixtures including their opening game against Juventus yet after seeing off early Utd pressure they looked dangerous on the break with quick passes getting in behind the Manchester defence and only some timely clearances and poor finishing prevented the Spaniards from scoring.

The second period began in a flurry of attacking activity, initially from Valencia then, with crowds backing, Utd as Rashford then Paul Pogba had shots charged down. Pogba's free kick was then palmed over by Neto as the home side began to build up a head of steam.

Yet somehow Utd failed to make the breakthrough, Valencia regrouped and both side's, as in the first 45 minutes, began to cancel each other out despite Romelu Lukaku bringing a fine diving stop out of the Brazilian keeper. Gonçalo Guedes had a marvellous chance to to score but passed instead of shooting and Utd scrambled the ball clear much to the frustration of the small band of Valencia supporters.

As the game entered its final stages the home crowd were urging Utd to attack and Rashford hit his free kick against the woodwork and Lukaku headed over when unmarked.

But despite a hectic 3 minutes of added time a scorless draw it was as boos rang out around Old Trafford at the final whistle.
