CHAMPIONS LEAGUE - Round of 16: Ten-man PSV hold out Atletico Madrid

PSV Eindhoven and Atletico Madrid played out a 0-0 draw at the Philips Stadion on Wednesday night.

The Dutch club had Gaston Pereiro sent off in the second half but managed to hold out the Spaniards in the Champions League Round of 16 first leg.

Atletico produced the first chance when Luciano Vietto raced onto a long ball and was able to prod past an advancing Jeroen Zoet in PSV goals but Jeffrey Bruma was well positioned to safely clear a bouncing ball off the line.

Moments later, PSV had shouts for a penalty when Jurgen Locadia went down in the area under a challenge from Gabi but there was minimal contact and referee Daniele Orsato waved away the protests of the home side.

On the half-hour mark, Antoine Griezmann was baring down on goal and looked to certain to score in a one-on-one situation but Zoet did brilliantly to keep the Frenchman at bay.

Minutes after that, Atleti were forced to defend stoutly when Jan Oblak denied Davy Propper from close range before Locadia and Jetro Willems' follow-ups were well-blocked as PSV hundred for an opener.

In the 68th minute, PSV were reduced to ten men when Pereiro was sent off for a second yellow card when he appeared to make contact with Diego Godin's face when attempting to clear a bouncing ball following an earlier booking.

Phillip Cocu's PSV then has to put men behind the ball in an attempt to keep Diego Simeone's charges quiet and it worked a treat as they managed to hold out for the final 20 minutes.

It sets up a gilt-edged second leg at the Vicente Calderon in Madrid in three weeks' time as PSV look to defy the odds and get past the 2014 runners-up.
