CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Mata magic inspires Man Utd to fightback win over Wolfsburg

Manchester United bounced back to winning ways in the Champions League with a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Wolfsburg on Wednesday.

The Red Devils fell behind in just the fourth minute when Daniel Caligiuri was involved in a string of passes before finding space in the box to get on the end of a Max Kruse through ball and slotting past David De Gea from about 10 yards.

Less than 10 minutes later, Juan Mata had a goal-bound effort cleared by a flying Dante header before captain Wayne Rooney fired wide after being found by a clever cut-back pass from Anthony Martial.

It was clear United had responded well to going a goal down was a third clear chance was created prior to the half-hour mark but Memphis Depay's downward header from Mata's pinpoint cross bounced safely into the hands of Diego Benaglio.

In the 34th minute, United were back on level terms when Caligiuri handled a chipped pass from Mata allowing the Spaniard to step up to the spot and send Benaglio the other way, finishing into the bottom right corner of the Wolfsburg keeper's goal.

A piece of Mata magic then saw the Red Devils go in front in the 53rd minute when his clever backheel from outside the area found its way into the path of defender Chris Smalling who slid it home from close range.

Wolfsburg came close to a leveller with just under 20 minutes remaining but Andre Schurrle went inches wide from an angle before Ricardo Rodriguez's late free-kick whizzed past De Gea's upright as United held on for a crucial lot of three points.

Louis van Gaal's men now sit second on the Group B table, with all teams locked on three points following CSKA Moscow's 3-2 home win over PSV Eindhoven, who had beaten United 2-1 in Holland a fortnight ago.
