Champions League : Man City cruise against Marseille

Manchester City ended their Champions League group campaign with a routine 3-0 win over Marseille.

Having already qualified as leaders ahead of this final match in Group C Man City made nine changes to their weekend game against Fulham and for most of the first half dominated Marseille who were fighting for a Europa League slot.

Riyad Mahrez had the best chances for the home team whilst Ferran Torres failed to get the ball out from his feet when ideally placed.

Aymeric Laporte narrowly headed over an Ilkay Gundogan free kick and it seemed just a matter of time before City scored as the French outfit struggled to retain possession or mount any meaningful attacks.

But midway through the half Eric Garcia went off injured to be replaced by John Stones and suddenly City lost a little of their earlier impetus and Marseille sensed a way back into the game.

And in the final five minutes of the half had two good chances to punish some slack City defending. Valerie Germain saw his close range effort blocked by Stones followed moments later Morgan Sanson shot from twenty yards which flashed narrowly wide.

Within moments of the second half starting City finally opened the scoring. Mahrez dinked a pass through to Torres who slipped the ball past keeper Steve Mandanda.

The visitors responded immediately but Leonardo Balerdi shot narrowly wide. The French outfit have lost their past seven away games in the Champions League and as they pushed forward to get a result spaces appeared for City to punish them on the break.

But City had increased the tempo and Marseille struggled to counter attack. Kyle Walker almost doubled the lead with a fierce shot which was parried for a corner. The hosts then introduced Sergio Aguero for the final 25 minutes after a spell out with injury.

With 13 minutes remaining it was Aguero who made the game safe after Nathan Ake's towering header was only parried into the Argentinean's path for a simple finish.

Victory made it 11 games unbeaten at home in the Champions League for City and just as impressive for boss Pep Guardiola was his team have only conceded one goal in the competition this season.

For Marseille they have now only recorded one victory in 12 visits to England and their miserable evening ended with Alvaro scoring an own goal.

The perfect result for City ahead of the local derby with Man Utd at the weekend.
