Swiss giants FC Basel have downed Liverpool 1-0 in their second UEFA Champions League fixture of the 2014/15 season.
Paulo Sousa's men added the scalp of Brendan Rodgers' Reds to their burgeoning English collection by edging the Merseysiders at St Jakob-Park in Group B of Europe's premier club competition.
Basel took the lead early in the second half when they exposed Liverpool at a corner and forced the ball into the back of the net courtesy of Marco Streller.
Reds keeper Simon Mignolet could only partially keep out a header from Taulant Xhaka's corner which allowed Streller to pounce with a close range finish much to the dismay of the visiting defence.
Liverpool responded swiftly and almost levelled when Tomas Vaclik denied Mario Balotelli's 35-yard free-kick before Lazar Markovic saw his follow-up effort blocked but it wasn't enough as the Swiss side celebrated with fervor.
Basel have now beaten Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool in Europe in the past four years and take plenty of confidence from the victory into their next Champions League fixture against Ludogorets Razgrad in Bulgaria on October 22.
For Liverpool, they will prepare for the much more daunting task of hosting Real Madrid who sit on top of the group with two wins from two outings.
