CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2nd Leg: Man City cruise with SEVEN against Schalke

Manchester City eased into the quarter finals with 7-0 victory on the night and 10-2 on aggregate over a demoralised Schalke outfit.

Three goals in eight first half minutes settled this tie as City finally broke down the resistance of Schalke who for 30 minutes had showed no ambition but to sit deep and frustrate the hosts who had struggled to break them down.

And whilst the German's tactics were understandable they had to claw a 3-2 deficit back from the first leg but just as it seemed they may reach the break level City struck.

On 32 minutes Sergio Aguero converted a penalty after Bernando Silva had been bundled over by Jeffrey Bruma. Aguero held his nerve after the Germans wasted time in allowing the spot kick to be taken with their protests.

Six minutes later and the hosts doubled their advantage but only after a delay for VAR after Raheem Sterling back heeled into the path of Aguero who fired home from an acute angle through keeper Ralf Fahrmann's legs.

Then just before the break Leroy Sane was sent clear inside the penalty area and his cross shot easily beat Fahrmann.

Ironically, just after City took the lead Schalke showed some attacking ambition as Benjamin Stambouli fired narrowly wide.

Unsurprisingly the second half was a stroll for City as Schalke exited the last 16 for the 4th consecutive time after being thoroughly outplayed.

Sane was denied a goal for offside by VAR even if replays did show him onside, but then he turned provider for Sterling who was only credited with the goal after VAR was again consulted.

With City in cruise mode they kept possession comfortably but still found time for Sane to end another sweeping move by providing the assist for Bernando Silva to strike number five.

And there was still time for Sane to provide assist number three by playing through substitute and local boy Phil Foden to round the keeper and finish. Another sub Gabriel Jesus made it seven as Schlake continued to be humiliated.

City march on in impressive style but clearly more demanding games lie ahead.
