CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 1st Leg: PSG impress with victory at Man Utd

An impressive second half from PSG saw them take a firm grip on this tie with a 2-0 success over Man Utd who had Paul Pogba dismissed in the final minute.

An unusual quirk of this game was that despite their status in Europe neither Man Utd or Paris Saint Germain have ever met in Uefa competition, although history is in Utd's favour in that they have won six of their seven two-legged contests against French opposition.

PSG have already lost in England this season, going down 3-2 at Liverpool on matchday one.

However what both the English and French teams have in common is they have suffered recent round of 16 disappointment. United have not reached the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals since 2013/14, while Paris's last two campaigns have ended at this stage.

For all Utd's recent run of good form PSG would be a step up class for their opposition but the home side showed confidence to take their game to the French outfit in an incident packed opening 45 minutes.

Utd looked eager to press their visitors whilst PSG were content to slow the game down with possession football.

There might not have been many chances but we had five bookings, goalmouth incidents and a possible sending off ignored by the Italian referee.

Marcus Rashford caused keeper Gianluigi Buffon to save at the near post then former Utd player Angel Di Maria curled one just wide.

Di Maria had an unhappy 12 months at Old Trafford and the home support showed him no sympathy every time he touched the ball. Paul Pogba drove into the penalty area causing Buffon to smother the ball ahead of the onrushing Jesse Lingard.

But the best chance of the half fell to PSG as a neat move released Kylian Mbappe who, under pressure from keeper David de Gea, fired wide.

Di Maria further infuriated the Old Trafford faithful just before the break when Ashley Young, already booked, nudged the Argentinean into the advertising hoardings provoking a melee of players before the referee restarted play with a throw-in. Certainly Young pushed his luck in avoiding a second yellow card.

The first half was played out in a brilliant atmosphere helped by the vociferous PSG supporters who brought out the best from the usually reticent home fans.

But it was the PSG fans who experienced the biggest high when their team took the lead on 53 minutes. Mbappe saw his downward header parried behind by De Gea and from the resulting corner Presnel Kimpembe arrived late at the far post to blast home.

Dani Alves almost doubled the French teams advantage but saw his shot deflected narrowly wide. However PSG were not to be denied and seven minutes later with Utd looking ragged a quick break exposed them and Mbappe added number two. The Frenchman almost doubled his tally but De Gea saved well.

As the second half progressed PSG looked comfortable as Utd lacked quality to put pressure on the Paris defence whilst their opponents always looked dangerous on the counter attack.

After the break PSG went up a gear and Utd failed to match them and must hope for a vastly improved performance in Paris otherwise it will be the French outfit who progress through to the quarter finals.

And Utd's humilation was complete with a red card for Pogba in the final minute.
