Celtic legend David Provan insists Steven Gerrard was right to quit Rangers for Aston Villa.
His decision to swap Ibrox for Villa Park has been questioned by some north of the border, but Provan has hit back at those claims.
"Spare me the drivel that this is a step down for the former Liverpool captain," he wrote in his column in the Scottish Sun.
“Some people would have us believe Villa are small-time compared to the Ibrox club.
"Tell you what, if the Midlands outfit are inferior to Gers they're hiding it well.
"Could Rangers have shelled out £38million for Emiliano Buendia in the last transfer window?
“Despite finishing 11th last season in the Premier League, Villa made £122m in prize money. Gerrard is back in the big time.
“Having cracked his head off the financial glass ceiling at Ibrox, the sky's the limit for him now.
“He could buy the entire Rangers team tomorrow if he wanted.
“You could argue his work was complete when he clinched last season's title. He was never going to squeeze as much from his players again.
“Accusations of disloyalty don't wash."
