Celtic boss Rodgers surprise contender for Chelsea job

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has emerged a contender for the Chelsea job should they sack Maurizio Sarri.

The under-fire Blues boss could get the boot if they lose to Manchester City in Sunday's Carabao Cup final after a disappointing run of results.

Zinedine Zidane remains the bookmakers' favourite to take over, with Sarri's assistant, Gianfranco Zola, and Blues legend Frank Lampard also in the running.

Rodgers, who was a coach at the Bridge earlier in his career, has also emerged as a possible successor with his odds being slashed to 10/1 overnight.

Rodgers last month warned Sarri he must change his hardline approach if he he is to change their fortunes.

“When I started coaching over 20 years ago it was very different," he told talkSPORT.

“I always think with players you can still tell them, but the world and society has changed and that means football has changed too and players are now more protected.

“Years ago, when you guys were playing, you'd have worked with managers who sometimes to be clear had to be very harsh, but you took that on.

“You took that on and you probably said to yourself, 'I'm going to show them that I'm better than that'.

“Whereas now, and this is not all players because I've worked with some brilliant lads who you can be harsh with, but a lot of players will take it differently now.

“The culture is also now much more diverse and in their culture they might not have that.

“It's becoming much more difficult, but you have to adapt to a manager and that's very important."
