Cech driving Chelsea bid for Rennes keeper Mendy

Chelsea's move for Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has the full backing of transfers chief and club legend Petr Cech.

The Mirror says the move for Mendy is being driven by the Blues technical and performance director Cech, who played 70-plus games for the French side before joining Chelsea in 2004.

Cech and Chelsea boss Frank Lampard have considered a string of keepers this summer, including Ajax's Andre Onana, Burnley 's Nick Pope, Borussia Dortmund's Roman Burki and Mike Maignan of Lille.

But for now the pair are focusing on Mendy as they look to bring in a rival for Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Mendy will cost Chelsea around £18million as owner Roman Abramovich continues to back his manager to the hilt.

The Russian oligarch has already splashed out more than £200m in what has been an exciting summer for Chelsea supporters.
