Carragher welcomes Liverpool U-turn: You were embarrassing the fans

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has welcomed the club's decision to reverse on furloughing non-playing staff.

It was announced last week that the club would be placing the non-playing staff on furlough, with the government covering 80% up to a maximum of £2,500 a month and Liverpool topping up a further 20%.

However, that decision was widely condemned and Carragher, a vocal critic at that decision, has praised the club for their change in approach and pointed out that it wasn't the first time the owners had backtracked on something after being criticised.

“I thought it was a shocking decision at the time and I'm delighted that they have changed their mind," he told Sky Sports.

“I still think it will leave a bitter taste for a lot of Liverpool supporters because what this did was, it saved the club a few million pounds which is nothing, it cost the taxpayer, and it embarrassed Liverpool supporters throughout the country.

“They embarrassed themselves and they embarrassed their own supporters. I'm delighted that they've changed their mind, they had to change their mind, I'm glad they saw sense.

“They've actually made mistakes before, in terms of ticket pricing, there was something where they tried to trademark the name Liverpool, and what they've also done, and credit to them, they pull back on it. That was always my hope."
