Carragher implores Arsenal to direct game against Barcelona

Jamie Carragher has urged Arsenal to adopt a more direct style of play in order to stand a chance of earning a good result against Barcelona in midweek.

Arsenal have been placed as huge underdogs ahead of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 encounter against Barcelona on Tuesday night.

Despite the tag, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has vowed not to adopt a defensive tactic and is looking to implement his side's usual passing game against the defending European champions.

However, former Liverpool defender Carragher has urged Arsenal to forget about their passing style and has instead urged the Gunners to adopt a more direct approach in order to stand a chance of earning a good result.

Carragher told the Daily Mail: "The best hope Arsenal have of getting a first-leg advantage is to forget about trying to out-pass Barcelona and instead play a more direct style.

"They have to look to exploit Javier Mascherano's lack of height by firing balls into Olivier Giroud.

"Arsenal had success against Bayern Munich in the group stage, when Giroud scored the first in a 2-0 win at The Emirates Stadium, playing in such a way and that is something they need to remember."
