Carragher defends Man Utd captain Maguire for late Everton equaliser

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has sympathy for Manchester United captain Harry Maguire.

The Red Devils conceded a stoppage-time goal from a set piece to draw 3-3 with Everton in the league at the weekend.

But Carragher sympathised with Maguire for his role in the shock equaliser.

"So, we both agree they're too deep. Harry Maguire has had a lot of criticism and the first bit of criticism, which I think is right, is that he's a leader at the back, he's got to decide where that line is," Carragher told Sky Sports.

"That line is wrong, it is wrong. The next piece that he's got criticism for is that he's playing people onside, I've got sympathy for him.

"He drops off and as the ball comes in, he's behind everyone, so he is now playing the Everton players onside.

"The reason I have sympathy for him is because I can put myself in that position, and I'll tell you why. Rafa Benitez used to be on at me about that, about free-kicks late in the game constantly.

"I didn't have the nerve to hold the line, I'd be that nervous about conceding the goal and I'd think I'd get up and head it away.

"When you're Harry Maguire in that position, when you're at the back of the line and stand in the middle and there's bodies everywhere, some players are offside, some players are making runs, a lot of the times you cannot see the ball.

"You're jumping and jostling and what I would do - which is a mistake - I'd want to drop two yards so I could almost see the ball and I almost think Harry Maguire has taken too much responsibility.

"I think that's the mistake he's made, he hasn't been brave enough, but I can put myself in that situation."
