Cardiff boss Neil Warnock has admitted the club have not been able to secure the signature of Emiliano Sala.
The news of a move for the striker was first reported by Sky Sports.
Now Warnock has confirmed that a trip to France did not pan out to sign the Nantes attacker.
Salah has 12 goals in 17 Ligue 1 appearances this season.
"At the moment it is very up in the air," Warnock said in his press conference.
"There are a number of players that we are looking at, especially in the French market. Nothing concrete at all. Nothing untoward, we just have to get on with it with what we've got.
"That's right [I flew out to France]. I spoke to the owner of the club [Nantes], they've got one or two decent players there as well. It's between us [why a deal didn't happen].
"I don't want to go into the details on that. He is one of a number that we looked at, there were two or three players we were looking at, at the same time."
