CAPITAL ONE CUP QF: Stoke account for giant-killers Sheffield Wednesday

Stoke City have booked their spot in the Capital One Cup semi-finals courtesy of a 2-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday.

Mark Hughes' Potters secured a path to the final four with a convincing win at the Britannia Stadium over an Owls outfit who had previously beaten Arsenal to reach this stage of the competition.

Ibrahim Afellay gave Stoke the lead on 30 minutes when he volleyed home Joselu's lofted ball before Phil Bardsley doubled the advantage with 15 minutes remaining when he rifled home a low shot from range after being teed up by Marco van Ginkel's short free-kick.

The Staffordshire club have reached the semis for the first time since 1972 when they went on to win the league cup as Wednesday return to focus on Championship duties.

Stoke join Premier League rivals Everton and Manchester City in the two-legged semi-finals with the four to be complete after Wednesday night's clash between Southampton and Liverpool.
