CAPITAL ONE CUP: Man City assert authority on Sunderland

Manchester City have comfortably accounted for Sunderland in the third round of the Capital One Cup.

Manuel Pellegrini's side defeated the struggling Black Cats 4-1 at the Stadium of Light to cruise through to the next phase of the league cup competition.

Sergio Aguero opened the scoring in the ninth minute, converting form the penalty spot after Patrick van Aanholt had been adjudged to have brought down Jesus Navas in the area.

Kevin De Bruyne helped himself to his second City goal in as many outings in the 25th minute with a beautiful angled finish from a Raheem Sterling through ball before the latter's 33rd-minute effort struck the upright and deflected back in off Black Cats keeper Vito Mannone.

Three minutes later, Sterling made it 4-0 to City when finishing off a nice move which resulted in De Bruyne's slipped ball being fired across Mannone and inside the far post.

Sunderland were able to pull one back in the 83rd minute when Ola Toivonen nodded home DeAndre Yedlin's pinpoint cross at the front post but the damage had certainly already been done.
