Burnley striker Rodriguez delighted for kid Richardson after Oldham goal

Burnley striker Jay Rodriguez was delighted seeing Lewis Richardson score in victory over Oldham Athletic.

After Rodriguez had got on the scoresheet himself – with a third goal in two pre-season games – Richardson pounced to complete a 2-0 win for Burnley at Oldham Athletic.

"I am really pleased for him," Rodriguez told the club's website, who like Richardson came through the youth system at Turf Moor.

“He is working really hard. He's a great talent, has great feet and is a really nice lad.

“To see him score his first goal, hopefully it's the first one of many and it will start him off."

Rodriguez had a hand in Richardson's goal with a shot which was parried for the young England international – who made his first cameo appearance in the Premier League last season – to show his penalty area prowess by reacting quickest to deliver a smart finish.

“We have all been young lads and to get that first goal is an amazing feeling and we felt as happy as he did!" added Rodriguez, whose first competitive goal for the Clarets had come back in September, 2008 in his first spell with his hometown club.

“I am sure he will be buzzing and I think he will kick on and keep learning and keep working."
