Burnley keeper Pope: Southgate call helped through injury

Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope has suggested that Gareth Southgate was a big reason why he made it through his injury hell.

The keeper was back in first team action for his club at the weekend in the FA Cup, where he kept a clean sheet against Barnsley.

And the 26-year-old is glad to be back after the shoulder injury that has kept him out since July.

When the player was asked by reporters if his England boss had kept in touch after the injury, Pope said: "He has.

"After I got injured, a couple of weeks later after it all died down, he rang me and I had a great conversation with him, so that was a nice lift at a time that was difficult. It was great to hear from him.

"Throughout the World Cup his man-management was top-drawer, so it wasn't a surprise really. But it was really nice to get that call."
