Burnley defender Carlisle urges Premier League to stay out of Portsmouth trouble

Burnley defender Clarke Carlisle would be unhappy if the Premier League bailed out Portsmouth.

Pompey, who visit Turf Moor on Saturday, face a High Court date next Monday as they are fighting to prevent a winding-up order over unpaid debts.

Burnley are a club often held up as a good example of financial management, and Carlisle believes the Premier League must be careful not to absolve big spenders of their responsibilities.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live: "My personal opinion aside, I think the Premier League have got to be very, very wary in how they control this situation.

"The fear here is they set a precedent that will be followed by others who might use it to their own advantage.

"If they dip into their own coffers now or something of that ilk to save Portsmouth, then what's to stop other clubs who are in poor financial situations trying to bag off their debts onto the Premier League or into others' hands, when really it's a direct result of mismanagement?"
