Bulgarian legend Hristo Stoichkov video-called Raheem Sterling after English players were racially abused in Sofia a fortnight ago.
England's 6-0 win over Bulgaria had to be halted twice due to racist abuse heard from the home supporters.
Stoichkov broke down in tears on Mexican television when speaking about the incident.
Sky Sports says Sterling received a video-call from the former Barcelona star, who apologised for the actions of his countrymen.
The call was organised by Stoichkov's former Blaugrana teammate Txiki Begiristain, who is Manchester City's director of football.
