Bruce proud of Newcastle after Wilson double sinks Everton

A double from Newcastle forward Callum Wilson ruined Everton's chances of returning to the top of the Premier League.

The 28-year-old converted from the penalty spot after he was fouled by Andre Gomes early in the second-half.

Wilson then linked up with former Bournemouth teammate Ryan Fraser, whose cross fell to him at the back-post for an easy tap-in.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin gave Everton a glimmer of hope with an instinctive finish in injury time.

But the Magpies managed to hold on to clinch their first win in three games.

And Steve Bruce was delighted to see his side snap their winless streak when speaking after the game.

"We knew it would be a battle against one of the great managers," said Bruce.

"He has had a few problems with injuries but I couldn't be more pleased. We deserved it.

"I don't know where we got six minutes from at the end. They threw everything at at us and the goal makes it edgy.

"We're trying to do things a different way and be more expansive but it is a work in progress. We have to do what is best for the team.

"They are comfortable at the moment."
