Sunderland manager Steve Bruce will hand midfielder Lee Cattermole the captains armband when he returns from suspension this weekend.
The Black Cats take on Liverpool at Anfield and the 22-year old will regain the leadership despite facing some disciplinary problems so far this season.
"I made a decision at the start of the season - and a conscious one - that he is the captain, and I am going to stand by him," Bruce said. "He is still my captain.
"I was convinced it was the right thing to do when I gave it to him, and after what happened to him, I am still convinced that I the long term, Sunderland will benefit from Lee Cattermole being the captain of the club."
