Brighton coach Micky Harris hails his kids for FAYC Man Utd shock

Manchester United have been bundled out of the FA Youth Cup by Brighton.

Brighton left Neil Ryan's young Reds stunned with a 3-1 victory at Leigh Sports Village.

United had ended Chelsea's 30-tie winning streak in the competition in round three, the night before Jose Mourinho's sacking, but their status as favourites against the Seagulls weighed heavily.

A Peter Gwargis penalty and a goal each from Ryan Longman and Haydon Roberts secured a memorable win for Brighton.

Brighton coach Micky Harris said, “It was nerve-wracking at times, but to come in at half 2-0 up against Man United is probably not a position we envisaged ourselves being in if we're being honest. But we did feel like we could hurt them on the counter-attack, and that's what we did.

“The boys took their chances, which is something we've done on and off this season, but not consistently.

“Tonight they did, and were resolute defensively as a group against a very strong and talented team. They kept their shape, stuck to the gameplan manfully and got their rewards.

“I thought they were absolutely fantastic. They put in a lot of hard work since we knew the draw, not just the players, but all the staff too, as we've got a fantastic team of staff that put a lot of work in day in day out.

“It's all about these moments and the Youth Cup is the pinnacle of the season, so to have this sort of result is a fantastic thing for everyone at the football club."
