Brighton boss De Zerbi: We mustn't dwell on Cup exit

Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi says they mustn't dwell on their Carabao Cup shootout defeat to Charlton Athletic.

The visitors created several good chances but were held to a goalless draw by the League One side.

Jason Steele then saved two penalties in the shoot-out but Charlton won 4-3 to reach the quarter-finals.

De Zerbi said, “I am sorry for the result, and I am sorry for our fans, because we wanted to win the game and try to get to the quarter-finals.

“I think we played a good game, but not a fantastic game and did enough to win. We made a lot of mistakes in the last five metres of the pitch. There were three or four opportunities to score in an easy way. And then if you have penalties you can lose."

De Zerbi is confident Albion can respond positively on Boxing Day when the Premier League campaign resumes at Southampton.

“We are Brighton, we can lose games. We had 10-15 chances but didn't score so there is the possibility you can lose the game. But the mentality of the group is strong and we know our level, so we will be be ready for the next game against Southampton."
