Boothroyd insists England U21s still alive despite shock Switzerland defeat

A lacklustre England U21 side lost to Switzerland in their opening European Championship group stage clash on Thursday.

Nice striker Dan Ndoye scored the decisive goal with 77 minutes on the clock.

The Young Lions dominated possession but were only able to manage one shot on target.

This was despite having a number of Premier League players, including Callum Hudson-Odoi and Emile Smith Rowe.

Aidy Boothroyd's side face an uphill battle to make the knockout stages - to be played this summer - with games against Portugal and Croatia this week.

"We are not out of it yet and we are going to go for it," Boothroyd said. "It's a setback and we don't moan about it, we get on with it. There's no time for moping and feeling sorry for yourself with freak goals. We are still in it, we live to fight another day and that's what we'll do.

"It wasn't all doom and gloom but the key thing is the result and we haven't got it. We lick our wounds, focus very quickly on the next game and make sure we get a good result."
