Boothroyd admits England U21s flat after Portugal defeat

England Under-21 boss Aidy Boothroyd admits they are facing a difficult moment after a loss to Portugal Under-21s on Sunday.

The Three Lions youngsters have endured an incredibly poor tournament, losing two games in a row and not scoring a single goal in the group stages thus far.

They lost their opener to Switzerland on Thursday, 1-0, and were defeated 2-0 by Portugal Under-21s on Sunday.

England must defeat Croatia by two clear goals in their final game, and hope Portugal defeats Switzerland, if they wish to progress beyond the group stages.

Boothroyd told reporters after Sunday's defeat to Portugal: "We've tried to put our finger on why we're not creating. We're talking about top players here.

"It's a slim mathematical chance (to qualify for the next round). I'm going to find it difficult to pick us up.

"We've got some hope and wherever there is hope, we have to go after it."
