Boniek: England midfielder Gerrard a shadow of Liverpool version

Polish legend Zibi Boniek feels Steven Gerrard, when wearing an England shirt, is not a patch on the version that captains Liverpool.

Boniek used the Liverpool skipper as the prime example of how playing for the national team appears to undermine the greatest club heroes.

Boniek - who played for Juventus and won 80 caps for Poland - told the Mirror: "I see Gerrard play for Liverpool and he is magnificent. He has power and he is one tough guy.

"But in the national team, there isn't even a shadow. And it is not just him. It happens to other players as well. They must be able to handle pressure if they are to succeed in the finals."
