Blackburn Rovers chairman John Williams confirmed the club did try to keep Carlos Villanueva at Ewood Park before his move to Al Shabab was confirmed. Williams told Setanta Sports: "Sam did not feel we could commit for a permanent transfer after the season Carlos has had. From getting chicken pox early on to the scrap we have had on our hands since.
"The general feeling is the type of football he played was not relevant to the position we have been in. We have been fighting for our lives.
"We did ask if we could extend the loan by another year but Audax wanted to sell him and so that was that."
