Alan Smith wants to stay with Newcastle United in the Championship.
Although linked with Blackburn, Everton and Fulham, Smith feels he owes it to United to come good after two injury-scarred years at St James's Park and atone for not keeping them up.
A United insider told the Evening Chronicle: "Alan hasn't heard anything from Blackburn or any other club, but he'd like the chance to stay at Newcastle and try to help them get back up in any case.
"He feels a strong sense of responsibility for what happened last season, having been injured and then unable to prevent relegation.
"He knows the situation at Newcastle is uncertain, and if the club decide to look to sell him, so be it.
"But he won't be pushing for a move, and whoever comes in as Newcastle manager, he would be itching to play for them."
