Blackburn boss Mowbray wary releasing Brereton to Chile

Blackburn Rovers boss Tony Mowbray says Ben Brereton Diaz will only play for Chile if he is fit.

Chile have selected Brereton for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Brazil and Uruguay.

But the striker has not played for Rovers since last month due to an ankle injury, and Mowbray says the club won't let him leave if his injury persists.

"He had his boots on yesterday, his first day on the grass," said the Rovers chief.

"He felt a little bit of discomfort and didn't finish it. I think he only did two kilometres instead of the planned three kilometres he was due to do.

"He informed Chile of that in the afternoon because they would have wanted him to go over a few days early and see if he could get some rehab done with them and see if they could get him out on the grass.

"It's positive he's got his boots on and is pushing on but he's not ready yet to progress quickly, so Chile have been told that he's not ready.

"He won't be officially called up until the 21st so we'll see where he is in another week's time."
