Birmingham academy chief Westley: We can match Everton youth setup

Birmingham City academy chief Terry Westley says the club's youth setup is making great strides.

Having seen Jordon Mutch make his long-awaited debut last season, Ashley Sammons, Dan Preston and Jake Jervis have all been given a taste of first-team action during the current campaign.

Westley compares the Brum academy to Everton's successful youth system.

"You look at Everton, they are an established Premier League club, they've got an established manager who has been there for a number of years and I think his remit is the whole club," explained Westley to the Birmingham Mail. "He doesn't just worry about the first team, he brings players through and puts Rodwell and people like that into the team and I think we are on the same lines.

"But what Alex, (joint first team coaches) Roy (Aitken) and Andy (Watson) will say to me is that they've got to be good enough to do that.

"I think they've seen that one or two are around the first-team and doing well enough."
