Birmingham academy chief Westley: Butland future England No1

Birmingham City academy chief Terry Westley has backed claims Jack Butland is a future England star.

The England U17 goalkeeper was tipped for big things this week by Blues chief Sammy Yu.

And Westley told the Birmingham Mail: "He can go to the top, no question. England's No.1? Yes, if he keeps doing what he's doing.

"He kicks it a mile with both feet, he can take goal-kicks off left or right foot, it's scary. He's 6ft 4in, he's got hands like buckets and he trains magnificently.

"Dave Watson (goalie coach) has done a great job with him as well because he really pushes him. Jack has done terrific."

Butland's development hasn't gone unnoticed by Blues' Chinese owners, either, and Westley is eager to see the hot prospect tied to the club longer term.

"What's he like at college? Spot on. What's he like off the pitch? Excellent. Does he cause you any problems when he goes away with England? Never. He's a low maintenance type of player and people are talking about him.

"I see nothing but having to sit down with him and put him on a longer term contract."
