Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has no doubts over the commitment of Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard. Reminded of how Torres was idolised at Atletico but still left to better himself, Benitez said: "Of course Fernando wants to win things, just as we all do, but I am sure he can fulfil his ambitions here. He wants to be in the Champions League next season and I can guarantee he will, because I know we will finish in the top four.
"When Fernando and Steven Gerrard signed their new contracts last summer, they knew the club had different situations to deal with and that reducing the debt was one of them.
"I am talking with them all the time and they know my idea for keeping this club going in the right direction. I do not want to look too far ahead, because it would not help my club or my players to start thinking about what might happen in June when we need to be concentrating on winning our next game and moving nearer the top.
"I have spoken at length with both players in the past week or two. We discussed how things are going and what we want to achieve this season, and both were very supportive and very positive. It was clear they share my determination to put this bad spell behind us and emerge as competitive as in previous seasons."
