Benitez hits out at 'social media coaches': Former players have 3 months then must prove themselves

Former Real Madrid and Liverpool coach Rafa Benitez says he's still learning.

Benitez insists coaching ability can never be replaced in management.

He explained to AS: "(Vicente) Del Bosque, when I was a young coach, told me: 'You will always train, because there are no coaches'.

"I told him that the former players were coming. And he insisted: 'There are no coaches'.

"I am a better coach now than 20 years ago. I have more experience, because I have lived many situations and this helps you to succeed more and make fewer mistakes. Now there are many coaches of what I call the media, social networks, who have many followers, but when it comes to making decisions... Pellegrini, at 68, is more right than wrong."

Benitez continued: "A young coach with enthusiasm can come out well for you, as was my case in Valencia. But that gets you one in many. However, experienced coaches give you guarantee and stability. The problem with football is that it is media coverage and former players have a greater presence in the fans' minds.

"And that gives them a head start. But that advantage lasts three months. Then you have to prove more than just being a name. It's not about being young or famous. But it is a trend that has been around for years and is now being promoted by social networks: he is young, a former player, he is good. But it's not always like this. It is about being good, about being permanently improving yourself."
