Benfica, Spartak arrogance can motivate us in Champions League - Celtic's Commons

Celtic's Kris Commons believes the sure mindedness of Group G opponents Benfica and Spartak Moscow can spur the club to the knockout phase of the Champions League.

The Hoops require a better result at home against Spartak on Wednesday night than what Benfica achieve against Barcelona at the Nou Camp to reach the Round of 16 of Europe's premier club competition.

If they can reach that stage, Commons feels that Celtic will have proved a lot of people wrong including both Benfica and Spartak who have showed little respect during the group fixtures.

"It would be a fantastic achievement because no one gave us a chance. We were more likely to be at the bottom of the group and no one gave us a great deal of respect going into it," he said.

"Benfica have been mouthing off and Spartak too. They gave us no respect.

"It's just an arrogance on their part that they think they have some kind of divine right to be in the last 16.

"Benfica have the difficult task of going to the Nou Camp so hopefully we can win and Barcelona will do us a favour.

"I fancy Barca to do it. You would be daft to bet on any team going to the Nou Camp and getting a result. Benfica have the harder task but know that if they win they go through so it's in their court.

"It would be a shame not to make the last 16 but we always knew that was a possibility.

"Even when we beat Barcelona the manager said it was based on the full six games and not just doing it on one night."
