Ben Thornley: Travesty if Cavani left; Pogba belongs at Man Utd; Garner crossroads

Cavani staying? Would you as a winger appreciate playing with him?

For a number of games I was championing Edinson Cavani and I believed it would have been a travesty if the fans did not get to experience watching such an incredible centre-forward in the flesh.

Don't get me wrong, we've had many at Manchester United. You think of Wayne Rooney, Ruud van Nistlerooy, van Persie. There's been so many brilliant forwards this century. But I'm not sure they have had the movement in the box and the understanding of the box that Edinson Cavani possesses.

For any young player longing to be a goalscorer or wanting to score a lot of goals inside the penalty area, then just watch Cavani's movement and anticipation. It would have been a shame for it not to be appreciated by the fans. And for him not to appreciate the fans when they were inside the stadium.

As a former winger myself at Old Trafford, you would develop an understanding with a player like Cavani in training. You would practice and communicate where he wants the ball, what pace and what height he wants the ball delivered. We saw that with his header from Marcus Rashford's cross against Aston Villa. He would've been a dream to play with as a winger.

I know that traditionally these days United have evolved from playing a 4-4-2 which they used when winning a lot of their titles under Sir Alex Ferguson. Could you imagine what Cavani could have done with the likes of Ryan Giggs, Lee Sharpe, Andrei Kanchelskis and David Beckham?

Cavani just has an understanding of what a forward is all about, and I tell you what, I wish we had him five years ago.

People were wondering if Cavani was going to be another Falcao or Alexis Sanchez. But he has been the opposite. For him, age is just a number for him. He never stops working and doesn't switch off.

WISE TO KEEP BAILLY

Eric Bailly has been really unlucky with injury which has stopped him from building a level of consistency. But if he can overcome those problems, there is no doubt the Ivorian can become a top-notch defender.

We all hope that Harry Maguire is fit for the Europa League final, but to be perfectly honest, it seems pretty unlikely.

This is even more reason why Eric Bailly deserved his new contract. I think he has still got work to do to dislodge Victor Lindelof. But he's a well liked member of the squad and very dependable.

He also gives the back four something a little bit different with his pace and aggression. Now let's just hope these two years can be more injury free for him.

POGBA SHOULD STAY

Manchester United loves having Paul Pogba at the club, both as a person and for what he can produce on the pitch.

The Frenchman is an incredible presence and the fact that he has moved to a more advanced role I think opens his talent up even more on the football field.

I know it's coming to crunch time now when United needs to tie him down to save him from moving on. But I genuinely believe, and I said this two years ago, that Manchester United is the place for him. I think he can believe United's talisman and take the club forward.

Paul Pogba is a player who, when he turns it on, is an absolute nightmare for opposition midfielders and defenders, and the club should do everything to keep him.

GARNER CROSSROADS

I've been watching James Garner closely for the last three years when he has performed in the U18s and U23s.

James is a very comfortable footballer. And not only is he a midfielder who can tackle and pass, but most importantly, he's a midfielder who can score goals. A tall and rangy lad, James will have no problems with his physique at the top level as well as a fantastic attitude.

It didn't quite work out for him at Watford, but since he has gone to Nottingham Forest, a team who have struggled this season, Garner has been nothing short of excellent. He has one of the bright lights of Forest's season and he scored a fantastic goal on the final day of the season against Preston North End.

Now, like many of his current and former United youth teammates, Garner is arriving at a crossroads. Having played Championship football for a season, his head might have been turned. He is probably weighing up his options and thinking, am I going to be considered like Anthony Elanga, Mason Greenwood, Amad Diallo? He has to ask himself, am I in that class and is there enough playing time available to merit me to stay at United.

The fact that he has been to two Championship clubs and never been out of his depth, I just feel as though he has got a decision to make, because I've got a funny feeling that during the summer that Championship clubs, and maybe even Premier League clubs, will be saying we can develop him.

Whatever he decides to do, I wish James all the best because he's a fantastic lad with a great attitude and he deserves to do well.

ANTHONY ELANGA DEBUT

It was brilliant seeing Anthony Elanga win his first-team debut against Leicester City. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has shown great faith in the lads who are coming through the academy.

Barring one or two matches, I've seen every game Anthony Elanga has played this season. And let me tell you something, he can go all the way.

The game against Leicester probably didn't go quite as well as he would have hoped in terms of making an impact in the attacking half.

But Elanga has plenty of time, he's only 19. I know what he is capable of and I can guarantee he will be in and around the first-team squad next season as he has the skill and pace to unsettle any defender.

OMARI FORSON

It was a shame that Omari Forson didn't get a chance to start against Derby in the final game of the U23 season after his blistering debut in the win over the Rams last week.

Forson is another player who is exciting to watch. He plays as an inverted winger cutting inside on the defence and has plenty of skill and pace.

He has been part of an U18 side that has scored plenty of goals this season and Forson has contributed to that total.

Next season, Forson will have to keep working extremely hard to cement a permanent place in the U23 side with a view of becoming the next United academy star to break into the first-team.
