Beardsley likens Newcastle loan signing Doumbia to Tino Asprilla

Peter Beardsley believes Newcastle United have a reincarnation of club legend Faustino Asprilla.

Seydou Doumbia joined the club on loan from AS Roma in January and made his debut for Beardsley's U21s in Monday night's 2-1 loss to Stoke City.

Speaking of the Ivory Coast international, who spent the first half of the season in Russia with former club CSKA Moscow, Beardsley felt he had some similarities to Colombian ace Asprilla who wooed Toon crowds between 1996 and 1998.

"Having had him with us yesterday and today, the first thing I thought was 'Tino Asprilla'," Beardsley told nufc.co.uk.

"When he we kicked off, he stepped over the ball and it was funny for me because obviously I used to play with Tino. As stupid as it sounds, that was the highlight of the game for me, when he stepped over the ball!

"The crowd almost went one way and the ball went the other. Class."
