Bayern Munich were incredible but we showed huge mettle - Atletico Madrid boss Simeone

Diego Simeone praised his Atletico Madrid players for the way they handled a rampant Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.

The German side dominated the Champions League semi-final second leg at the Allianz Arena to win 2-1 but Atleti progressed to the final by virtue of the away goals rule after a 2-2 aggregate.

Atletico keeper Jan Oblak was colossal for the Spaniards, making save after save as Bayern produced attacking wave after wave, and Simeone felt it was a courageous effort from his side to hold off Pep Guardiola's men and edge their way through to the May 28 final in Milan.

"In the first half, we were up against the best team I have faced in my career," he said after Antoine Griezmann netted a vital away goal in between Xabi Alonso's deflected free-kick and Robert Lewandowski's second-half header.

"The way Bayern played was incredible.

"The rival was formidable in the first half; in the second, we reacted well.

"The players had a huge mettle at the end of the match.

"We go through to the final very happy."

Atletico will take on the winner of Wednesday night's second leg between arch enemies Real Madrid and Premier League club Manchester City at the San Siro at the end of the month.

The scoreline heading into the Santiago Bernabeu leg is 0-0 following last week's initial bout in Manchester.
